Muscle Control Journey
Well where do I start? First to introduce myself I am Lewis
Lindsey Jr. Well from the time I was young I had always admired the strength in
others be it physical or mental. Throughout my life me along
with my brother Jarell have always seen examples of both from different folks.
One of the main ones my father Lewis Sr who was 5’6 and served in Vietnam had
always shown signs of strength.
Lifting up my
mom who at the time was heavier and on top of that losing her ability to
walk due to MS he was holding a dead weight but he made it look easy. In terms
of their mental strength my father held on strong throughout the years even
after having his Strokes and Heart Attacks he still maintained his sense of
humor and will power until the end of his life in 2005. I remember this story
my mom use to tell me at the time. She would talk about this story all the time
where the ambulance was trying to pick up my mom who at this point is losing
her ability to walk so their lifting dead weight.
My father wasn't a big guy by looks but while
these pretty big guys were struggling to lift my mom up together he was able to
do it singlehandedly. I can believe that
as I've seen him on the regular do things like this and that became my
motivation to want to be able to gain that strength mentally and physically. So
by the age of 10 I was already lifting my mom up who at the time was dead weight
and around the high 200 range. My brother in law was also another man of great
strength doing many feats of strength himself both in the mental and physical
department. So I had those influences early in life. I also without realizing
it was introduced to isometrics by my brother in law as he would have me
sometimes do wall sits and push up holds then but years later when I would see
my younger brother again I would be reintroduced to it like he was.
I would look up the likes of Bruce Lee one of
my favorite fighters and philosophers and saw how he also incorporated
isometrics in his daily routine from reading his books. My Jarell also shared
with me 7 Seconds to a Perfect Body by Paul O Brien(now legally Batman O Brien)
and got more into isometrics. I was definitely seeing that I was getting
stronger but didn't have control of the strength which was pretty scary for
people(laughing) so I had to first learn to control it. So then one day with my
brother I learned about Maxick and Muscle Control. I learned the need to
control my muscle well my body through the mind and I learned to not so much
tense the muscles but rather to relax them.
I believe I started muscle control since April to now July 28, 2013. My
muscles feel less tense and more rubbery and I notice I have a little more
control of my muscles and though I haven’t yet gotten complete control I can
see I’m on the pathway there and I look forward to continuing this journey and
want to share that with others would want to get into Isometrics and Muscle
Control. I have great respect for the likes of Benjamin Bergman, Batman O Brien
and other modern strongmen who continue to keep this legendary culture alive
and being willing to teach others. I can say my journey isn’t over and I only
have more to grow and I indeed will.

A Day With A Legendary Strongman
Just before Thanksgiving, there was a strongman traveling to
a town to do a show, when I found out he was going to be heading only an hour
away from my city, I couldn't pass up telling him I was near there. After his
show we met up and trained outside in my backyard smashing tires with my Thor
Hammers along with his Stronger Grip Sledgehammer and after getting my ass
kicked while needing a few breaks this dude finishes with 1000 swings in 21
min. We ate dinner down the road and the first half was how awesome his son is
doing, the other half was about training, putting knowledge and wisdom into my
head and even talked some stories about Strongmen and even about his time with
Matt Furey. We said our goodbyes but the story doesn't end there, there’s more
to come.
After Thanksgiving has passed, the strongman came back
because he had some traveling to do shows and I caught up with him again, this
time it was more than just a few hours, it was for more than a day. He did a
show no more than a couple miles from where I lived, I got to help out with the
show and be apart of it by ripping a phonebook in front of 400 kids plus their
teachers. It was an experience I’ll never forget and being a performer from a
different era of my life it was nerve-racking but exciting at the same time. I
learned how he performed and spoke in his shows and how to get an audience’s
attention but getting his own message across in different types of situations.
I’m sorry you’re probably wondering who the hell I’m talking about, my
apologies. This is Professional Strongman and Motivational speaker Bud Jeffries.
After the show, Me and Bud packed up and were about to grab
some food when he needed to get his oil done for the truck so we stopped at a
shop and sat in the truck while we talked about wrestling, the old-timers and
even about a cousin that was legendary in his own right, it was the Boxing
Legend Jim Jeffries. He told me a story about him and Jack Johnson that was
pretty awesome. After the oil was done, just before we left, he rips up a deck
of cards just for kicks for the mechanics and one guy even said jokingly
“Thanks for making me feel afraid of you.” We get a bite to eat at Subway and
before we did this, this powerful and humble strongman tries to hook me up with
a pretty girl not once but twice. Messing with him calling an a-hole it was
pretty funny and I literally nearly turned purple from blushing really hard. We
get dinner than its back home for the evening.
Before I continue with this story I just need to point out
that being in his presence and admiring him for years it was like if a baseball
fan spent the day with just a Barry Bonds or a Albert Pujols, it was that
awesome. Training alongside him was an experience you can’t comprehend, not even
at a workshop and I’ll tell you why later on. I couldn't keep up with him at
times but how can I? I’m just learning the tip of the iceberg on conditioning
and here he is just pounding on those tires. For the most part despite needing
breaks quite frequently, he just about literally broke me down because I had
jut gotten my ass handed to me and although he never said it I kept thinking of
him saying “Come on man, keep going.”
This guy I felt took me under his wing and wanted to help me
put things in perspective and understand what you can do to help people even
more than what you’re doing now and make something happen. Learning from him
was surreal and it gave me something to use for the rest of my life and do
something nobody can do. I’m still young and I have far more to learn but for
one night, it has given me a lifetime to use.
Continue on with the story, we’re eating and decided to put
on the Expendables 2 and while watching this, we broke into little
conversations about the actors and than for a brief pause during the movie we
got to talking about each other’s obstacles and sharing funny stories and let
me tell you and I know he may not admit this but Bud had stories that made Jeff
Foxworthy sound dull and I just couldn't stop laughing at times because the way
he expressed them was just priceless. If you truly want to know Bud, making you
laugh is one of the best things he can put on you and it shows that we as
strongmen are not big, tough and demeaning guys; we’re just like everyone else
with different backgrounds and finding ways to make each other laugh.
After the movie was over we set everything back up, sat in
the lounge chairs and went over stuff about the old-timers, steroids, guys in
the upcoming Superhuman Workshop and helping me move more forward with my
passion for Physical Culture and although it lasted only a couple hours, it
felt like a lifetime in a good way just listening and sharing knowledge and
wisdom. He truly is one of the best guys in this business and I’m proud to call
him one of my brothers. He’s not just a mentor or a guy who helps you out a
little bit in time, he was like an older brother and passing on his words of
the business onto me. It was one of those things you just never forget.
Before I end this I want to tell you the difference between
being in an idol’s presence one on one vs. being at a Seminar or Workshop.
Being at a workshop, you connect with them and get to learn what they know so
you’ll get better but no matter how you slice it, there’s another person sitting
right next to you getting the same teachings and doesn't have that same feel if
it was just the two of you. One on one however is a whole different experience,
it’s not even the same league as being taught at a seminar, it’s just the two
of you and going into much deeper levels of knowledge, stories and getting to
know your idol on a very different level to the point where it’s not just a few
conversations, you literally feel compassion and hold a place in your heart for
them that you just can’t get anywhere else.
With Bud it wasn't just being with one of the strongest guys
in the world, it was like being with that older brother you wished you had
growing up and being apart of something that has a mystical feel to it and
feeling like you’re a part of a family that you’ll always be happy with.
Spending time with him was one of the greatest experiences of my life and I’m
already getting a bit emotional just looking back on it and it’s something I’ll
never forget until the day I die. I hope I get the chance to do it again in the
coming years and learn from him as much as I can stand and pass on to my kids
because he’s one of those people that you can’t help but like and get to be
apart of something that you love and cherish. Thank you Bud and I’ll always be
there if you ever need me, you truly are one of my dreariest friends and you’ll
always welcome. Stay strong brother and never stop what you’re doing, you are
an awesome friend, a loving husband and a damn good father to Noah, he is the
luckiest kid in the world.

Be Proud To Wake Up In The Morning
Most people really hate getting up in the morning because
they have to work or take care of kids and feel like crap from some of those
nightless sleeps. To avoid this, practice your thinking and how it helps you be
energized when you do wake up in the morning. The usual thinking “god I hate
waking up, 5 more minutes.” How often have you heard that one whether you’re
working, going to school or whatever? Changing your thinking can make you or
break you as you decide what to do when you wake up.

Can You Become A Real Life Avenger? Pt. Two
"Another Avenger article? Are you kidding me? You're such a nerd man." Damn right I'am and proud of it. If you don't like the Avengers, good for you keep moving and let those who do read about them. Yes its a few months away for the premiere but I don't give a shit, I'm a fan, I'm into them (so are millions of people) and all I can say is....Avengers Assemble.
Lets get down to brass tacks here, none of us however we try can't have super powers like our favorite superheroes. However, inside all of us we have powers that scientists can't fathom. We literally have the power to generate super strength and speed that can just be so incredible to have we never really learn its full potential. The mind/muscle connection is one of your greatest weapons in your arsenal of training, daily life and whatever you want to accomplish in your life. Master this and you will create superhuman levels of strength that you never thought possible.
For a moment I want you to not think about your typical Barbells, Dumbbells, Kettlebells and Machine type training routines or programs. They're good in their own right but there's far more then your typical type equipment. Its about time you looked outside the box and look for whats been in front of your faces all along. You can lift nature's weights and get strong....Sorry I meant to you can get Hulk Strong lifting logs, rocks and you can even take on some man-made stuff that will build real world-class strength and power through kegs, barrels and tires. Cavemen didn't have hand-held peices of iron to get them alive and strong on survival. They moved logs, carried wild beasts, pushed builders of rock and stone. These men were the incredible hulk of Evolution and we should embrace what they did to build our own ways of functional strength and power.
When we think of the Hammer what pops in our minds? Construction, building, fighting through, domination? I think the word of one powerful tool that in one way or another can give you strength and conditioning unlike anything else. Here are some Hammers for you to look at and find which one suits you. Thor's hammer would be my recommendation. Think about it. What if you had the ability to train and move like the God himself and build powerful wrists and grip strength that would envy those around you. Wouldn't it be cool to swing and move that Hammer around have awesome physical strength that even Thor himself would be proud of. I'd say that be pretty damn sweet.
I love these superheroes because each one has a somewhat cocky but unbelievable personality that you can't help but love. Tony Stark (Iron Man) is another version of Bruce Wayne/Batman as in he uses his fortune to create the best weapons for him to take down the fiercest of enemies and underneath the metal suit he's a playboy, billionaire, philanthropist and good hearted guy that wants to make a difference.
Thor is the god of all the Avengers and has been one war hungry son of a bitch but needed to learn the hard way that just creating a war and celebrating with your friends while trying to prove yourself as a warrior isn't the real way of being a true hero. Like Hercules you must use your strength and power for whats really meaningful and build whats more important.
Bruce Banner (Incredible Hulk) has a fiery rage within inside of him that if provoked turns him into a over-powering, jaw dropping muscular Hulk. His anger fuels his strength and destroys anything in his path and doesn't always know whether its right or wrong. Controlling that anger and using it to Avenge those that are in need is more important then getting pissed off and going on a rampage.
Steve Rogers (Captain America) is a compassionate, selfless and enduring figure of inner strength and will power that not one of the other Avengers can fathom. He's a man integrity, character and stands up to bullies when others are knocked down and don't want to fight anymore. There's nothing really cocky about him but I'm sure someone who has read the comics or saw the film can find a way. He values the strength he has been given when some others take it for granted and use it in ways that just aren't right and don't have any real necessary meaning. When you value your strength, you understand its true meaning and use it to help others who are weaker and show where it comes from, not just your muscles but from your mind.
As a team The Avengers are the best of the best. Its arguable since there's the X-Men and the Justice League but I feel they're the very best because they bring something that's unique and gives you another prospective of what you can have when you have four guys that can take names and put boot to asses time and time again. The point I'm making here is when you create the best of the best in your arsenal you are unstoppable and there's nothing that can stand in your way.
When you train, train with fire, be mindful about what you do, don't let anyone tell you you can't achieve something great when I and others believe in you and will help you take it to the next level and beyond. Don't ever stop believing in yourself. Its tough to get through things in life but when you are challenged, take it and make it your bitch.
Bring the power inside you out and believe that whatever you face you will give it everything you have, even if you fail, there's still challenges to tackle and you will one way or another be sucessful. Be the Avenger you were meant to be.

Tribute To Slim The Hammerman
As a young boy in Pennsylvania, little Lawrence Farman sat down at Zern's Farmer's Market in Gilbertsville at 8 years old while his parents did their shopping. One particular table was part of a crowd of people looking on at very old and past his prime strongman by the name of Joeseph Greenstein a.k.a The Mighty Atom. Atom would lecture the benefits of eating healthy and what it can do to help you live your life with great enthusiasim and love. During these lectures he would bend spikes, drive nails through boards and break chains with great ease to name a few. He had been doing it about 25+ years. This boy however was just amazed at what this old as rock old-timer can do and kept going there for many years.
Slim would start to grow like a tree and as a late-teen began working at a Rock Quarry. For up to 14 hours a day 6-7 days a week he would be breaking rock and stone by the ton with his heavy sledgehammer. As time went on he was just so powerful and strong with that hammer that his mates would start to take notice and be in awe of his rugged and extreme strength.
When most strongmen back in the days f the follies and industrial revolution they usually were no more then 5'8 and weighed no more then 170 pounds at best. Very few men at that time were over 200 pounds and 6' tall. Slim however surpassed these numbers and got to be 6'6 and over 220 pounds of hard, rugged and steel corded muscle. During one lecture the Atom asked the audience "How is it I, an old man among you, Am the only person to bend this spike?" One man spoke out and this was the same kid who had watched Atom at 8 years old now in his late-teens early-twenties and made the statement that started a chain-reaction for what would be now legendary "You ain't talking to me old man."
Atom asks the rugged, sinewy young man to come on up and show him. Slim is twice the size of Atom who is 5'4 and 155 pounds soaking wet. He takes the spike and puts his hands on the top to get ready but Atom stops him and says "No...You can't bend it like that, its impossible." Slim decided to still do it because it felt comfortable to him. He bends the spike in full and for the first time in all of the years Atom has been performing had never seen a man do that. Atom asked Slim "Is there anything else you do?" Slim tells him he cuts stone with a sledge hammer and can raise it from horizontal to vertical from the ground using just the bottom of the handle. The Atom didn't think this was possible and asked Slim to show him. The following week, Slim brings his 16 pound hammer and shows the Atom what he can do. Each time this powerful man levered the hammer, Atom was flabbergasted and never has he seen anyone else do this.
From that day on Atom would have his chance to reveal his true secrets of the Old-Time Strongman and took Slim under his wing or because of the giant's height above his wing LOL. Over the years Slim and Atom performed together and Slim would start to build super muscle and extremely strong tendons with his Hammer Levering working up to almost 50 Pounds with 2 hammers. He just couldn't stop getting stronger. When the time came it came in 1975 in Madison Square Garden when Slim would rise to become the Legend that Atom always saw in him and came full circle when he lifted his world record 56 pound hammers. This night was the birth of one of the last remaining Old-Time Strongman.
Most men when they turn 40 begin to feel that they're over the hill and can't accomplish what they used to 15-20 years earlier. Slim would have none of it and threw away that mindset and guess what happened? At age 40 he didn't peak his strength. It kept getting stronger. He was bending steel, driving through boards and hammering his way past what most men think is impossible. between 40 and 50, Slim began feeling invicible and his strength just kept rising. When you are that dangerous at that age you don't want to be messing with that kind of power I don't care who you are.
As the years flew by and long after The Atom had passed on and the torch went to Slim, This once little kid who is now by all means The World's Strongest Man was breaking ground and every time he lifted a hammer, his legendary status was just as breathtaking as it was when he first levered that hammer infront one of the most famous Strongmen himself. His potential has reached far beyond what most people even himself can ever imagine.
An important aspect of the Old-Time Strongman is whether muscles or tendons are the most important to train. From the mouth himself, Slim firmly believes that its the tendons that are a key. You can build muscle any way you want but its the tendons that reveal a person's true power and strength. I believe this to be true.
Recently the now 75 year old strongman was inducted into the York Barbell Hall Of Fame with his late mentor and one time best friend The Mighty Atom and for them its an honor that has been long overdue and took way too damn long to finally come up. These 2 men paved the way for many premiere strongmen today. It is fitting that Slim has hammered his way in the halls of some of the greatest men in the iron game in history. In my opinion he should've been in the hall of fame just when he began to peak. As a strongman myself I'm honored to have learned from his training DVD and has helped me become stronger for the feats I want to perform. He is now immortalized and Slim's records will never be matched and if one man can do I want to see it along with other greats of the iron game today. Like what Babe Ruth is to Baseball, Slim The Hammerman is to Old-Time Strongman.
Slim, this is for you old man and I pray I get to one day speak with you and learn from you. You are a man among men and you are without question a strongman's strongman. Thank you for all you have done and I believe from the bottom of my heart from what I read about The Atom, he couldn't have chosen a better suited man then you.
