Are Resistance Bands Really that Effective?

 For decades, Resistance Bands have been a part of workout regimens for many people from Weekend Warriors to World-Class athletes. The big reason? They're pretty easy to use, about as versatile as you can get and very effective in developing muscle while also conditioning the body. Regardless of your fitness level, bands such as Chest Expanders & Dopamineo Bands are awesome for working the muscles that other pieces of equipment aren't always able to touch.

The simplicity however is not to be underestimated. There's a great way to use bands to get their muscle-building benefit. Let's go over a few tips to help you out....

Depending on the type of band you get, the amount of force to stretch the band will work the muscles like with Free Weights or Machines. Now, the latter two uses the same weight in every direction you work with but with bands, the big difference is the more you stretch it, the heavier it goes. It will literally fight you to prevent you from stretching it. 

For the muscle building effects, there was a study done in 2019 that shows similar strength gains that conventional gym equipment provided. Bands may not look like much but they can strengthen the body and build a more natural physique. In a lot of ways, bands create greater tension on the muscles and are able to work them longer during certain movements. 

 Although bands are incredible for rehab and strengthening the body to work through injuries, they've also become a great deal to those who practice certain sports even such as bodybuilding to condition the body in a capacity where they don't have to rely on big equipment to get the job done, they can do it at a park, in a hotel room, at the beach, in their backyards and many other places. For the Dopamineo Bands, these are extremely effective in getting in serious condition just about anywhere and can be used for a variety of ways and also because of the elasticity, has a longer life span than most bands out there today. 

Bands are incredibly adaptable because even with a shift change in a movement, you can make it harder or easier. Some bands you can be very explosive with but with others, you can make them slow as well and have almost an isometric component to it. Whether shortening or lengthening a band, the resistance can be tough as hell or have you working in a greater capacity such as cardio type training. Like I said above with being able to train just about about anywhere, that's because the majority of bands are extremely portable, meaning you can stuff them into a duffle bag or suitcase and be able to travel with them. Hell if you want to get a micro workout in at the airport you can (I would recommend shorter bands because I don't think you want to be sprinting or doing longer distant exercises towards people using a Dopa Band). Besides, bands are better at getting past security than a kettlebell or barbell ever will.

When it comes to cost, bands are perfect for those on a budget and depending on the type you get, you can basically put an entire gym into a carrying sack. I've got my Dopa Band and TNT Cables in one bag that weighs less than a couple pounds and able to carry and travel with. Some bands are more expensive than others but when it comes to the comparison of a machine or a set of dumbbells, its a fraction of the cost. 

For the final tip, it's important to stay focused on the technique. No matter what band you use, don't ever get so sloppy that you're going to end up hurting yourself. The great thing about this is, bands force you to utilize technique in order for an exercise to be effective. They help keep your posture in line otherwise the band won't move as much or will snap back at you. They're a hell of a coach in that regard. It's also important to not put so much tension on a band because you want to be able to move as smoothly and with precision as possible to have an effective workout. With the Dopa Band, it can stretch a great deal but it's not about just stretching it, it's about working with the resistance at a level that you can do well even if it's challenging. Why Hybrid & Overcoming Isometrics Are So Damn Effective

 


The bulk of my training, at least 70% of it is Isometric Training working exercises from all sorts of angles and using my bodyweight, a strap, a hand towel and a wooden dowel as equipment. The rest of the time, I just pick and choose various things like step-ups, loaded carries, hammers, mace and resistance bands. When it comes down to it, Isometrics is the most versatile form of Physical Culture. You can do them practically anywhere and just about a limitless variety of exercises that can stretch the imagination. 

My favorite forms of Isometrics are the Overcoming & Hybrid variety. For those wondering what these are, Overcoming Isometrics are exercises where you push/pull/squat against an immoveable object such as a strap, a wall or using your own bodyweight. A Hybrid is a combination of both Overcoming & Yielding Isometrics where you do an exercise such as a Push-up, Pull-Up or Squat that tackles the immoveable format while fighting against gravity. These forms create what I call the Game Genie of Strength Training (In other words a cheat code) to develop strength that not only can be utilized maximally but also doesn't put wear and tear on your joints while also developing a powerful physique.

The results you see above are just part of the journey of my fitness career and one that has helped me heal injuries when needed and to build strength in the tendons and ligaments to sustain a strong skeletal structure. Isometrics are so damn effective because of the intensity you can put into it and create workouts that are short and to the point without needing to do hundreds of reps of anything unless that's your choice to go for. They provide a structure of being utilized as a warm-up to get the muscles ready for dynamic movements but also as a cool-down or finisher to keep yourself strong and energized after a hard workout. By themselves they're incredible for those days where you don't want to do a whole lot but can get plenty done and depending on the intensity, you'll feel it almost immediately when done right.

I try to keep the exercises to a minimum working as many muscle groups as possible without tiring out. Hitting the arms hard with curls and Hybrid Push-Ups, work the back doing mainly deadlifts and various rows, shoulders are bow and arrow pulls and overhead presses, legs are wall sits and Zercher Squats, Chest are also done with the Hybrid Push-up & Hybrid Plank along with The Crossover using the Iso-Bow and the Core is pure Bodyweight doing Gymnastic type Isometric Contractions such as the Hollow & Arch Body Holds, Side Planks, Dead Bug Crunch & the Side Bends. All in all, a workout varies from 5-20 min depending what I want to do that day. To make the intensity effective and efficient, I do the classic "SSSS" sound on the exhale for the 7-12 seconds or until the breath is completely done. 

I like the Yielding Isometrics which is basically fighting against gravity and just holding a position with less intensity which I do from time to time such as Fist Planks, Horse Stance, Iso Pull-Ups, Lunges and the Gymnastic/Wrestler's Bridges. They're awesome for building strength and endurance in certain positions and sure as hell are great for flexibility but the Overcoming versions always made me feel tighter, faster and gives me greater focus on what I want to work on. When I really focus on them, I always also feel lighter and leaner. You do have to be careful however because if you go too hard for too long, they can wipe you out and tax the CNS so be sure to recover when needed. You can do them everyday just vary the intensity. 

They're also very effective because it doesn't also rely sole on strength, they can have a cardio effect too because you can blast through a ten minute workout and feels like you ran sprints because of the jacked heart rate. When you contract hard and put as much as you can into it, you can be breathing hard after just a few seconds and need to recover. With less intensity, you hold for let's say a minute or more and slowly but surely your heart rate goes up and the lactic acid builds up after a bit (try doing the Hybrid Push-up or Squat for a minute and see what happens). I've done a Hybrid Push-Up for a little over a minute and was breathing hard like I just ran a 10 second sprint, it is that intense. 

In Overcoming Isometrics, the author throws in the scientific analysis along with the compartments of the various chains (Push, Pull ect) that equip the level of intensity and strength needed to make a workout effective. Now many know that Isometrics have been around forever yet is still so underrated because it's not fancy or so complex like with other Mainstream Fitness Formats. The real key here, is the simplicity in how you train the muscles to contract along with low-skilled exercises that just about anybody can do. 

When it comes to equipment, there isn't a whole lot you need but if you want to add variety to get the most out of your Isometric Training, you can use the Rings, The Worldfit Iso Trainer, The Iso-Bow or the Swisses Pull-Up Handles. Free Workouts For Everyone

There's the old lyric "The best things in life are free" which has a lot of meaning especially when it pertains to life but in this case, we're going the fitness route. Believe it or not, you can find some of the very best workouts on the planet without spending a single penny and it's from one of the best resources on the internet. Sure there are great courses out there you can snatch up (not one where an 86 page book costs you $150 to learn how to jump rope) and these courses are the pinnacle like the Grind Style Calisthenics Series, Movement 20XX and others. 

Saving money is always a good thing whenever you can do it but sometimes you don't always know where to look to find that area in fitness where you can find a shit ton of workouts and exercise programs to suit your goals. This is where Darebee comes in. I've written about this site before and it bares repeating, it truly is at the top of the list of the best free resources for training. It's a series of mainly Circuit workouts ranging from complete beginner to elite athlete level and it just keeps growing. Consists of about 95% bodyweight style training and the rest has you using equipment like light kettlebells, sandbags, jump ropes and a pull-up bar depending on where you find them. 

Most of the exercises are about as basic as you can get but each workout you find can either be the easiest one ever or the hardest you've ever been put through. They can be tough as hell but you have options to modify the workouts or make them the best ones for you. I've done workouts that lasted a few minutes to nearly an hour long without a break and I'm telling you, they'll kick your ass. The site however goes beyond the workouts which already has over 2000 to choose from; there are specific collections that target certain groups of people that are themed such as Superheroes, Military, MMA, Anime, Video Games, Street Workouts, Jumping Rope and many more. There are sections that are based on scientific analaysis on breathing, running, water intake, recovery, when to go hard and a bunch more. There's even stuff on diet you can use and research on.

Darebee is a great starting point for those who want to get into fitness or haven't done it in a while. You can spend the rest of your life doing these workouts but they can also be a great add on to courses you can afford to grab. I would at times use small circuits from this place with my Suspension Training or Isometric Training. I would do them on off days as part of recovery and other times I'll go hard and time myself to see how I do without resting (or use the rest period to mark off a set and jump into the next one). I'll even make up a circuit of my own as inspiration like this one below...

Finished this in 23:33 totaling 100 Hindu Squats, 200 Punches In Horse Stance, 100 Push-ups, 200 Step-Ups & 500 Standing Punches. Great for conditioning. 

I love doing 10 Round Circuits because that gives a real rounded total. Darebee workouts mostly have you going up to 7 rounds which is still a great level to achieve especially if you're doing some really hard ones, I just prefer 10. Some workouts are more HIIT based which has you doing an exercises for x amount of seconds each until a time limit is reached and you repeat it for as many rounds as the workout calls for. 

I believe although it's a free resource of training, it encourages you to branch out for more to help guide you into another realm of experiences in your fitness journey. Some folks there use these workouts as add ons for when they go to the gym or as off day workouts, they are used as supplement training for athletes in high school and college, they have been used in classes in P.E, Sports Conditioning, rehab and many other ways. The only real pay you make with this site is the option to donate so they can keep it running or buy their workouts in PDF or Book form such as the Darebee Volume Series which each has over 100 Workouts to choose from. You can print out and make a book for yourself or set up folders in your hard drive that consists of all the workouts you want. I use to do that and if your internet is out, they're right there in your laptop, phone or tablet. 

The only investment here is your time and energy, it is a great option if you truly want to save your money for other stuff in your life. Are they the end-all-be-all, of course not, there are other things you should use if you want to advance in your training but that's up to you. You can still have the best workouts of your life using nothing but your bodyweight. Hell during a 6 week sprint training phase a few years ago, I would use some of the workouts in addition to the sprints, in that time frame, I dropped over 15 pounds and lowered my blood pressure by 32 points in both top and bottom numbers. These workouts can be life-saving and can get you fit in record time. Some of the best training I've ever done was because of Darebee Circuits. I've done them in hotel rooms, the park, in my den, out in the garage and at the lake. You can do many of them anywhere at anytime. 

You have options out there that won't cost you anything and these are awesome for when you really need to save money for special trips, paying off bills, when food is more important than a course and needing new clothes or furniture. We all can use a little help from time to time and these are part of that to help out a fellow human being.

Power Up Your Legs With The Portable Power Jumper



If you had to pick one athlete that had some of the most powerful yet conditioned legs in all of Physical Culture, The Great Gama would be at the top or close to the top of a short list. For being undefeated for decades and doing more squats daily than the majority will ever do in their lifetime, it's a wonder how he stayed in shape for so long. His regimen has been grossly exaggerated but at the same time, you can't deny the sheer strength and power he possessed. 


Leg work such as Squats, Lunges, Step Ups and Jumping movements are an essential to staying physically fit. You don't always need to do hundreds if not thousands of reps to reap the benefits. There are many ways to do leg work and you can make them easier or more challenging but in the end, making leg work a priority is one of the best things you can do. One of the things that Gama did to make his squats more challenging was using a Ring Weight called a Gar Nal where you put the inside of the Ring onto your shoulders and do squats that way. Now, that's about as bad to the bone as you can get when it comes to strength and conditioning in the old traditions of Physical Culture but at the same time, it's not as compatible or versatile for most people. There is another way though.




This device is not necessarily meant to make squats or other leg exercises "easier", but it does get the job done and has been used by the pros and by fitness enthusiasts the world over and that's the Portable Power Jumper. It's an apparatus that you can put your feet into a strap and put resistance cables onto your shoulders. This can take your leg conditioning to another level in the modern day. There are other forms of resistance cables you can do for the legs but most give you limitations but the PPJ can have you doing all sorts of stuff, even Hindu Push-ups & The Back Bridge. It's awkward as hell and as long as it doesn't snap on you in the hairy peaches, doing the bridge with this thing really tackles the back, core and legs like nobody's business. For a period I would do this for a few reps rocking back and forth and hold for about a minute (it's a miracle it never hit me in the coconuts) and I would feel it almost immediately. It really helped strengthen my bridge and one of the reasons why I could hold a nose to mat bridge for three minutes any time I feel like it.
