The Benefits Of Animal Movement Strength Training


Fitness methods come and go and we never know what the next trend will come next. For some, a method is not a trend or something just discovered, it's a lifestyle or better yet, a style they take beyond the norm because it's part of their life and they want to master it. That's what Animal Style Training is like for me, I always go back to it no matter what I try and the path takes me back to a place where I can be my true self from a fitness stand point. There's always something to try and take on with the challenge and the ideals but moving like a beast in the wild just feels different than anything else.
Practicing it for so long, it always fascinates me on its origins and why it has stood the test of time. If you do enough research, you'll find that Animal Movement Training has its roots in Martial Arts & Wrestling. On the eastern side of the world, the mighty Shaolin Monks use animals as a testament to their success in Kung Fu and other arts by mimicking animals in their unique form. In the west, animal moves are a traditional conditioning method in Wrestling. Anybody who's been on the mat can still feel in their memory the pain and lactic acid build up from crawling like a bear or going backwards like a crab, walking like a duck or moving like a seal. 

In recent decades, Animal Moves are used more as a warmup in MMA schools and football teams use this method for conditioning. The Bear Crawl is the most common animal used because it's so damn simple yet can turn a weak kid into a rugged machine within less than a few months if not weeks. As good as that sounds, the benefits alone are far beyond just warmups and conditioning style exercises. The warmup version is just a beginning to what really comes into play. 

Believe it or not, moving like an animal in the wild takes on shapes and forms beyond what we could normally understand or what we've been taught. It's more of an untapped resource more than we realize and when you start to get into it, there's a boost of strength, agility and challenging aspects you may have never experienced before. Here are some benefits to help you understand this:

1. The Expansion Of Your Performance & Function

Our bodies are far more capable of doing amazing things than other traditional or conventional methods call upon. When we focus on something one dimensionally, the body will reflect on this and we wouldn't be using our full potential in the aspects of sports or in life in general. Nothing wrong with using other forms of exercises, matter of fact, some are pretty damn essential to do but yet, the demand for more versatile movements needs to be utilized. Practicing Animal Style Movements can do phenomenal things for our functionality and perform at a greater level. We are challenging the norm by moving in ways that are more in the 3D variety more than just focusing from a single point in training.

2. Quality Of The Movements & Mobility Training

As we practice moving like a wild beast, we form patterns that are in 3D which has a high potential of developing great mobility and joint lubrication. The muscles can be shortened or elongated but also with many cases, the activity in these positions build an incredible reservoir in the range of motion of the joints. Learning the aspects of the Lizard Crawl for example shows how the Core is in constant motion of twisting and rotating throughout the movement. This in turn will train the spine very well. The hips are getting mobilized and the shoulders are getting worked as well because of the support they provide while also rotating as you take each step. This exercise alone is a full body movement that develops incredible strength and movement quality in the body.

3. Restoration & Rejuvenation Of The Body

Our bodies and our brains were developed with similar movements to the animals. Think about it, as a baby, we learned to crawl, progressed to walking and than to sprint like there's no tomorrow. As we age, it becomes more and more important to maintain our quality of life by moving and keeping our strength, mobility and efficiency for as long as we can. For a lot of us, Animal style training can be seen as a fountain of youth that will revitalize the body. Animal moves also has great potential to target injury prevention and possibly getting rid of aches and pains. This method makes you feel like a kid again.

The Price For Fitness




Various places around the net provide quality aspects of what people are looking for and a great many of them can be costly, as much as $10,000 or more just to go to a seminar. Is it really worth it? If you got the savings and have a determination to do it, that's awesome and hope it gives you something in return. When it comes to fitness courses or even the cost of personal training, not all is created equal.

In many cases, you would expect that if you pay for this much for a book or a session with somebody, it's going to be the best quality possible yet in reality, there are some greedy bastards out there. Don't get me wrong, I bought plenty of courses over the years and got great benefit out of them. I also got courses that were expensive but the quality of them were as shitty as you can get; crude pictures, writes like a 5 year old who just discovered sesame street, too much about the author, very little in how to apply exercises and other things. 

Over the years as well, you pick up on who writes what and how they advertise. Some people copy and paste someone else and pretend that they're unique and you got people who rip off someone else's work entirely. It won't be the first time and sure as hell won't be the last. Matt Furey has been ripped off many times but he also took a man's style of training and molded it into a global phenomenon which put a lot of people off but also made a killing in revolutionizing physical culture in the modern era for 20+ years now. I get it, people need to make a living, they want the best things in life but I believe in not always needing to stomp on people and take them for granted.

There are so many versions of methods of exercise that you don't know who's really the best or who's just out for the money. Let me ask you this: Is it worth it to you to buy a course for 250 bucks and get crappy quality? Or, would you want a course that's just under 30 bucks that has roughly the same amount of exercises, has ten times the quality and is relatable to even the average person? I would guess quite a few would go for the latter but in this day and age, gullibility can make it easy for some shmuck to spend some of his weekly paycheck to buy a course that promotes well but brings false promises and horrible writing along with making a customer work on exercises he clearly isn't ready for.

Believe me, in some cases, it's better to pay and invest in your health than end up paying a ton of hospital bills and end up in so much debt that it never ends. Unfortunately, some people pay good money for something and end up in the hospital anyway because something went wrong either by following a program too religiously that it caused problems or a program set them up for failure. It happens sometimes.

You can find some of the best training programs for free on the net, even some of the old time mail order courses but even free comes with a price if you're not careful. Just because its free, doesn't mean you won't pay for something later on. Some "gurus" even make the most ridiculous claims in order to sell courses and there are literally some guys out there who sell courses that belittle people and go straight for the jugular in hopes of making them believe their work is the end-all-be-all. That's just messed up and if you're going to belittle, make people feel horrible about themselves than they already are or even try to make them believe your shit is far better than anybody else, that says more about you than your customers. 

There's always a price, the question is, which one are you willing to pay? Personally, I believe in high quality work but not perfect. You don't need to be a perfectionist to have a great course and it certainly doesn't need to be bedazzling either. I believe in finding stuff that hits the spot for you. It's like the idea of Three Bears Method....There are things that are too much, too little and there's that one that just hits it right on the mark and you made it work in your favor. The idea is to find the third bear first, it may take trial and error but the possibilities are there. 

You'll find some of the best stuff just on the side bar of this blog alone. Are they the Babe Ruth of all courses and equipment? Hell no, but the quality, affordability and reviews on them are pretty damn awesome. You don't need to take out a mortgage payment to get the very best. Stay strong and be amazingly awesome.

Isometrics As A Recovery Tool

When we push ourselves, more than likely we will be sore the next day or feel less than 100% of what we can do the next day. Many of us have experienced this and sometimes it's because we do things our bodies weren't ready for yet or just went a little bit further than we should've but it happens. At least being sore means you're not dead but very often, being sore also means you pushed more than what you needed to progress. In reality, you just feel slightly worn down but not out. 

There are different kinds of soreness but the most common one is the muscles aching and you're feeling it the next day or have trouble sleeping. I've been so sore that when I was a teen, I couldn't get out of bed and felt like an 90 year old man just wanting to die. I've also been sore that although I can feel it everywhere, it didn't stop me from training and doing something else to stay active. Funny how things are as you get older and wiser.

Recovery is as important as the training itself and we sometimes forget that. It's the yin and yang and we need to find that balance. I do believe in doing something everyday even if its for 5 minutes regardless if I'm sore or not. Most days, I can just go and not feel sore at all but every now and then, one of those workouts that just rocks you and tries to tear you down. Recovery should be about resting, lower impact training and time to work on keeping the joints healthy as the body repairs itself. This is where Isometrics can be an incredible recovery tool.

Using Isometrics as a method of recovery is essential and we don't always understand that. It doesn't have any impact on the joints, doesn't take up much time and they can be just as cardio based as they can be strength based, just need to know which buttons to push for that. Overcoming Isometrics are amazing for this. Yielding can be just as good but Overcoming (from my experiences) harness a level of strength training without the fear of pushing so damn hard you'll be out for a week. Whether using a wall, a strap or yourself, Isometrics can work the body without overlapping what you're recovering from fitness wise. If you get injured, that's a whole other thing and it isn't the same as having sore muscles for a day or two.

Most days, I never feel sore and can go pretty hard but every now and then, one of those workouts that just knocks you on your ass and you need time to repair happens but it shouldn't stop you from training. That's what I love about Isometrics, I don't have to push myself hard to get in a good workout and I'm still getting quality recovery. They're a go to whenever I want to do them and get some awesome cardio benefits from doing 45 sec to 1 minute holds. Most of the time I don't go beyond a minute because mainly of my attention span otherwise it's just a boring hold and testing the "endurance" side of it. A minute may not seem like much but if you truly understood how Isometrics work, it can be the longest minute of your life (just try the hybrid push-up). 

You don't need to bust your ass every single workout. Some people can get away with it but if you push beyond the soreness, it can lead to injury. I'm not saying you shouldn't challenge yourself but to be efficient in your training and everyday life, you need to have quality "rest" and being active to the degree where you're giving yourself proper recovery without going gung ho all the time. Stay as active as you can but don't overexert so much it puts you in bad positions where you can't work or do what you need to do. The older we get, the more quality of training we must be able to maintain and at some point, Isometrics would be a godsend to have in your arsenal.

Fitness Tools To Spice Up Your Conditioning

If you're a lifter, strongman, body weight enthusiast or starting training you want to have top quality tools to make your conditioning that much better then the next guy. For me every now and then I would throw my sledgehammer around, do some swings, levers or holding at a certain angle to not only strengthen my grip but to get me breathing hard and when you are training hard and breathing hard, growth hormone comes into play and that helps build muscle, jack up your heart rate, building tendon strength from angles certain methods can't touch. If I were to recommend top quality tools for conditioning it be from Ryan Pitts' Stronger Grip.

From maces to clubs to hammers he's got it. I have had the pleasure of using a couple of the clubs and his hammer and I will tell you off hand they are tough as hell. If you're new to them start with a weight that you're comfortable with and can do a significant number of reps and sets. I'm a body weight guy at heart so I don't do very heavy weight when it comes to equipment but when I need that extra edge and hit muscles from angles body weight exercises can't touch then I would hit the clubs or hammer. It doesn't take much to get you breathing fast and when that happens you're burning off fat like a furnace.
