Building The Biceps Through Suspension Training

 Bodyweight Training can be very interesting when it comes to certain aspects of it. The pushing, pulling, squatting and all its variations can have an impact on how you apply things in everyday life. It's really one of the GOATs of Exercise you can do anytime and anywhere next to Isometrics. 

A solid form of doing Bodyweight work is through Suspension Training or Suspension Calisthenics where you can hook or hang a strap and do many more exercises than if it was just you alone. It opens a gateway to another realm of fitness and conditioning. For Strength Training purposes, its important to note that like with weight training, Suspension work is most effective when you can control the movement and utilize tension or in other words Muscle Control to target certain muscles. Because it's bodyweight, you're the true engine and driver as opposed to moving a inanimate object like a Barbell or Dumbbell.

It's interesting that with a Suspension, you can switch from one exercise to the next by placing your feet in a certain position or lean back a bit more to make certain exercises harder or easier depending on what you're shooting for. For instance, targeting the biceps and forearms in this format would be to lean back enough to where you can have a good grip on the handles, turn the palms towards your face and Curl the arms until the full movement reaches eye level like so here.


Working the arms this way gives off different vibes of control and technique despite it being a low-skilled movement. Within your control, put the tension into the biceps as you move and feel as you pull into the handles. curl your wrists as well which can also target the forearms as well. Now remember, although you're specifically targeting a body part, you still need to stabilize yourself within your foot placement, keeping your core and back tight and bring the hips within alignment in order to make the movement as bad ass as possible. 

Will this movement give you cannonball 24 inch pythons? Most likely not but you can build some solid natural strength and muscle doing this particular move. Because of movements like these along with rows and pull-ups, you can have some powerful arms that are not only functional but can keep your joints, tendons and ligaments strong as well. You don't even need to do a ton of reps to get results. As a matter of fact, don't focus so much on the number of reps themselves unless you have a specific goal in mind, focus on the tension you put into it and work the technique. Don't even go to failure, once you hit a certain point where you may have 2-3 reps left in you, hold the top of the movement in an isometric fashion for a few seconds to end a good set. 1-2 sets is more than enough. Train to stimulate, not annihilate.

Burning Like Wildfire

 The desire to be fit is more than just creating something within time, it has to spark a side of you that burns within the psyche. Training programs will always come and go, some don't need to have a ton of skill to get results but there's always that plan. Being your own architect so do speak. You make the designs, the structure, the foundation and the map of where things go. You lay out the dream on paper or in your mind, then you take action and start building.

Sometimes, a program takes on a life of its own, it consumes you because of your time and investment in the project you want to see come to fruition. It's one of the things I like about Suspension Calisthenics; its not very difficult to understand what exercises work, but in order to make them work, you need to lay the ground work. You can possess the knowledge, but its the application that pieces together brick by brick.

Doing things like Push-ups, Squats, Pull-Ups, Dips and even Curls for that matter may not seem all that simple when in reality they're the keys that unlock the doors to what can be accomplished. From a Suspension Trainer like the WorldFit Iso or even a typical Suspension Setup , you have the most basic tools that can be put into a bag. Multiple Variations that are like the rooms in your floor plan, each room may have similarity but it has its own character it's own personality in the designs you made. Even something like the Pull-Up can be constructed by doing a move where you start with a certain progression that has on your feet and the only muscles you're working is your grip, the back, arms and shoulders. Learning to create tension and master before going to a harder progression. 

Too many people in the fitness industry make things complicated and that's really by design because simplicity doesn't sound flashy or extreme. Those who want you to be flashy and extreme are the ones who don't give a damn about you, they only care about convincing you that what they're selling is the only thing that works when in reality, it's cheap knock offs that don't deserve anything more than a fuck you to the person who thinks they're better than anybody else. Simplicity, utilizing tension, train the muscles to stimulate, not annihilate and be in control. 

Doing hundreds of reps have their perks, shit you've read enough about my Dopa Band workouts or my 500 Squat Sessions or 1000 Step Ups. It's not that they don't work, they absolutely do, but they're only a part of the puzzle. Doing very high rep workouts have their place yet some only care about that and that alone which is why they don't build muscle very much yet they think they look like Bruce Lee or something. Bruce was as shredded as they come and despite his small size, the amount of muscle he had was incredible compared to those who believe in their own hype and look like they could barely carry grocery bags. If I had to pick an athlete that remotely had a build like Lee, it was guys like Maxick. 

Back to the task at hand, using greater tension to stimulate the muscles has perks most don't realize. When you can program the idea of Muscle Control into movements in a Suspension Style Workout, you're putting in work that has a much better capacity to put on muscle. You may not look like a Bruce Lee or a Mr. Universe but you can pack on natural muscle that not only brings out a great physique but also puts real strength on the tendons and ligaments. Combine that with Isometric Training and you got yourself some insane Strength & Muscular Development. That's one of the main ingredients to getting bad ass results. 

There will be people who will try to convince you otherwise because it doesn't suit their narrative or vision for what they want to sell you. They'll try to sell you some stuff that seems promising and talks a good game, but in the very depths, it's nothing more than desperate attempts to make you believe everyone else is full of shit and they're the ones that can't do anything wrong. It's manipulative tactics that show that they're in it to take your money and don't care whether you get hurt or not. It's stupid and makes them look weak to such a degree that regardless of their claims, an 11 year old can beat them in Arm Wrestling. 

With something like Suspension Calisthenics, there's no manipulation, there's no dark secrets hiding behind the exercises or making ridiculous claims. It's in your face and direct to the point but using words of encouragement and making you the star of your own program. Sure it has routines and all that to give you something to look into, but it doesn't have that "I'm better than you" bullshit antic and Matt Schifferele doesn't treat you like you're a loser if you don't follow his style, he wants you to succeed, he wants you to become a greater version of yourself and shows with enthusiasm and preaches about using simple tools to build strength you couldn't have dreamed of that lasts a lifetime with consistency. 

Bodyweight Training is a powerful asset in your fitness arsenal and when you can use things that could fit in your pocket, you have a whole new world of knowledge at your disposal. I never want you to feel and neither does Matt, that's why we want to give you the resources you deserve and want to create something for yourself. Be amazingly awesome and get cracking. Fun Training Over The Last Few Days

 The last few days have been not too bad and the weather is getting nicer and warmer out. On Wednesday, I went to the bigger park near by the one I usually go to and did some Isometrics and Suspension Training with my straps. Warmed up with the Isos doing full body work. Wrapped my WorldFit Iso Trainer around a Tree Branch and got in some good bodyweight training that actually left me a little sore at the end but not a whole lot.

Pull-Ups: 4, 3, 2, 2, 1

Dips: 3x5

High Tension Amosov Squats: 3x12

Rows: 3x8

Simple Push/Pull/Squatting and rested as long as needed between sets. The Dips were more of a bitch than anything and trying to control all my bodyweight holding onto nothing but the handles and my legs not touching the ground. Tore a little bit of skin doing them but the healed up pretty quickly. For more info and training ideas for this type of training, check out Matt Schifferle's Suspension Calisthenics. Great stuff. 

This was not even my first workout of the day, it was my biggest one though. Earlier, I did some Neck Mobility and Joint Loosening. Waited a little bit and then did some Bridges but mainly focused on rocking since it has been a minute doing any consistent bridging. I did the following exercises to stretch my back, neck and plenty in the hips, lower body and core.

4x5 Back Bridge Rocks using the hands as support, heels up and slowing touching my forehead and nose to the mat.

4x5 Front Bridge Rocks using the hands as support. 

4x5 Each Side To Side Rocks in the Front Bridge. 

Felt great and my entire body went into a relaxed state for quite a while. 

Thursday was a hell of a training day where I went to the park in the morning, much earlier than I normally would and wanted to get a bad ass session with the Heavy Dopa Band. Did my circuit of 5 Exercises for 10 Reps each of the following:

10 Chest Presses

10 Rows

10 Squats

10 Alt Skis

10 Propellers

20 Rounds.....

Even timed this workout. Focused mainly on Technique and Breathing. Let the speed come naturally and finished the workout (1000 total reps) in 32:31. The rest of the day was decent and had to cancel on somebody due to things that were out of my control. 

Yesterday was a good day to do Isometrics and Bridging Exercises. Did my Isos in the morning before handling stuff with my apartment. Got to visit a family member, hung out, had lunch, showed them some Isometrics to help with certain issues to build strength. Was a great visit and went for a walk out in the nice fresh air. After I got home, cooked some Steak & Rice, watched Raiders Of The Lost Ark (Best of the Indy series next to the Last Crusade) and capped off the night doing my Bridges. 

Rocked 10 times in the Back Bridge using the hands for support, touching the mat with my forehead and nose, heels up. 

Slight Rest.

Held a 3 Minute Nose To Mat Bridge with arms crossed to the chest and heels up. Took 18 Breaths.

10 Front Bridge Rocks using the hands as support.

Slight Rest

20 Side To Side Front Bridge Rocks (10 Each Way) using the Hands as support. 

Slight Rest.

3 Minute Front Bridge Hold. Took 15 Breaths. 

Hell of a workout and felt invigorated. Took a nice cold shower, chilled out for a bit then went to bed.

What's on the agenda for today? Cleaning up the house a bit, Isometrics, maybe Bridges and Band Work but who really knows. See where it leads. Might film some stuff but haven't figured out what yet. The Finer Points Of Suspension Training


 For the most part, Suspension Training is one of the most effective yet simple forms of bodyweight exercise around. Some advantages include the portable and versatility but there are lesser known advantages that people may not be aware of or even realize. 

For starters, it offers a wider base than typical bodyweight training because of the greater resistance you can apply. It fills in gaps that give a boost or even a harder outlook to regular Push-Ups & Pull-Ups. They can be used in a variety of ways such as: Those who are starting out and want to lay a foundation, work around injuries and give even a seasoned veteran of Physical Culture a run for their money. If you're limited in your Range Of Motion, this style of training can also bring a flexible entity into how you can build yourself up despite that other side of the coin. You can virtually create any workout you want within your capabilities.

As you're aware, the most basic rule of effective Strength Training is to utilize the format of Pushing, Pulling & Squatting. With Suspension Work, it can build a bigger branch of accessory training such as working curls for hitting the biceps or working on hip abductions. This is most likely a greater option to not only save money on gym memberships but even more cost effective on fancy equipment. It works like a gym that fits right in your backpack. 

It also creates greater freedom to train practically anywhere from your home to the park, in your hotel room, at the office or wherever on your own terms. If you're traveling, you can get in something quick like waiting for your flight, stretching your legs from a long car ride or getting the most out of it after a long day at work. Being able to move more freely is just the cherry on top of a kick ass sundae.

Because of the wide variety of exercises, some sources will list either very few or dozens upon dozens of exercises. Some of the things listed can seem overly repetitive (like many of Ric Flair's matches) because they really are more of a variation of one thing or another. In reality, you would only need a few exercises at a time to get the most benefit, you can do all of the exercises until the cows come home but are you really benefiting from them? Once you learn only a few for each muscle group or Chain of Muscles, you'll have a broader base for what to work with to truly enhance your physical training. Modify if needed and focus on the goals you set for yourself.

What Makes Suspension Training One Of The Most Versatile Tools In Fitness?

 When it comes to minimal equipment, it's important to see what can give the greatest benefit for putting the most in your training. Things like Resistance Bands can be very versatile because they weigh practically nothing and can fit into a travel bag easily. That's one of the reasons why I like Suspension Training from the WorldFit Iso Trainer, you can take it anywhere and it easily fits in your pocket basically. When you can have a whole gym that you can take anywhere, there's not a whole lot of excuses to not train and I'm being modest here.

Being able to switch from one exercise to another in the blink of an eye makes training not only interesting but doesn't take a lot of time to get shit done. When you have that at your disposal and courses like Suspension Calisthenics, your entire world is your playground. It may not turn you into Mr. Olympia or some Acrobatic but it can do wonders for your body and mind that you didn't think were possible. Think about it....Being able to channel your creativity into a device that stretches the imagination beyond the core of a typical gym rat. A device that gives you opportunities to better your well-being as well as teaching you how to be your own coach. Not only that, it's AFFORDABLE as hell.

Yes bodyweight exercises are completely free and can be done anywhere and at anytime. You can learn a ton on Youtube and other Social Media that you can't learn in a book, however; it is important to realize that as great as those places are at times, having a knowledgeable course with someone who knows the grind and is fitter than many people his/her age, it isn't hard to find what you may be looking for and that's where I love recommending and teaching you to be aware of who is pretty damn good and who's a POS snake oil numbnuts who's only after your money. 

I understand people need to make a living and it's understandable in many cases to charge people services that cost an arm and a leg because they believe that's what they're worth, even when they look like bean poles or looking like they got inspired by Karen Carpenter's look of Anorexia. There's literally a guy who charges a "collectors" edition for a BOOK for 250 bucks. Paperbacks & Digital Downloads for 400 bucks or 200 for two books. I'm sorry but that's ridiculous as shit and quite frankly, I've seen better quality that was cheaper. This dude is also one of the crudest and sexist guys I've ever come across and doesn't have the balls to see what he's doing to people's hard earned money. Treats people like dirt and hates anyone who isn't fit because at one time he wasn't fit himself, it's Psychology 101, you put out what is a reflection of your own insecurities and shoving people's inadequacies down their throats. The only way that crazy haired and poor excuse of a man stays in business is because people are gullible enough to buy into his bullshit. There are better options folks and you don't have to feel like a loser for it either. 

I'd rather put my faith in a fitness master or knowledgeable trainer that treats people like human beings, gives encouragement and make you feel like hanging with him is one of the most fun things ever. He doesn't treat you like you're worthless, he gives you options and respect along the way without the need to rant on how bad things are and you are a POS. That's what I see in Matt Schifferle of the Red Delta Project. He's one of those guys that makes you feel good about yourself when you think you don't and he doesn't have some kind of agenda to make you feel like his way is the highway and sure as hell doesn't have some kind of ego that makes him hot shit. What he brings to the table is hope, opportunistic in a positive way and makes training interesting and fun to do. Remember the cost of a book in the previous paragraph? Matt's Grind Style Calisthenics Paperback is less than 30 Dollars and has higher quality and knowledge than the other guy's two books combined. With the cost of the WorldFit Iso Trainer, it's still way less than 100 bucks together and you have far more options in terms of exercises than ever and exercises that regular bodyweight styles can't match but can be a great addition to. The cost of the kindle version? Less than 10 bucks. Here's another kicker that really makes me love his work...His Youtube Channel has free workouts and tips that go beyond the books but still have the wherewithal to give you the option and encouragement to get the books. The other guy's channel, doesn't even have the option to comment let alone have the way of learning things from a fitness perspective. Awkward angles, long rants and shoves his ego down people's throats more than a Scientologist Cultist trying to recruit some poor guy. 

What makes Suspension Training one of the most versatile tools in fitness? It gives you the ability to train anywhere, anytime and makes you learn how to control your body from another outlook of bodyweight conditioning. Being serious about getting fit is never a bad thing but it's also important to have fun with it too and you get to play and experiment in ways that make you feel like a kid again. Matt's style of Suspension Training gives you all that and more and is one of the fittest men around today and at 46, he's still getting stronger and fitter. He teaches control and how to apply tension while also being a little quirky and often times nerdy about it but that's what makes him unique and a great asset to the Fitness Industry, he's one of the guys and makes you feel like you can accomplish anything with a little extra. I really cannot say anything bad about the guy, he's likeable and is one strong motherfucker for a bodyweight guy.

A Simplistic Approach For New Resolutioners

 Day 4 of the New Year and most likely the New Year Resolutioners are still out in droves just itching to go over the top to only fail after burning out quicker than a Camp Fire. It's the overwhelming expectations we have on ourselves or others expected of us to do better and to create habits in a forceful and unrealistic manner. This is especially true for those who want to get fit and become stronger. Getting fit and stronger is about the journey, not trying to reach the end like fast forwarding a movie, it doesn't work that way and many never seem to get the memo. 

What if there was a simpler approach to things that not only help you stay consistent but actually give you realistic goals to reach and have a new found sense of purpose to be fitter and stronger using progressions that dig into the very soul of training. One of these methods is using the old school style of weight training used by the men and women that pioneered the industry before steroids and PEDs. I'm talking about working with simple exercises and progression systems based on the writings of Brooks Kubik whom by far is one of the greatest writers and physical culturists of the modern era. He takes what made bodybuilders and strongman of the past the fittest than many even fit folks today. His style of what's called Dinosaur Training has paved the way for achieving real strength that actually has real world applications, not just in the gym. Learn the treasured secrets and training programs of the all time greats from Arthur Saxon to John Grimek. 

If your approach is more bodyweight based, no problem. Bodyweight Training is a great approach to fitness that not only is more versatile but can be done anywhere and anytime. A great style of Bodyweight Training is through circuit training where you go through a series of exercises in a single set, rest and repeat for as many sets a circuit requires. The very best place to learn about circuit training is Darebee where you can find all kinds of workouts that range from beginner to advanced levels and be able to work around these workouts to your own fitness levels. Best of all, it's completely free so you can save thousands upon thousands of dollars in fees. They have themed based workouts that cater to those who have a knack for things in nerd culture and fun things based on Yoga, Mythology, TV Shows, Films and even Video Games. You can always substitute certain exercises so you can progress to ones you're capable of achieving to do the full workouts. There are even places to find research on nutrition, meditation, if you've had previous injuries and where you can start. 

If you're still into Bodyweight but want a different approach like working with minimal equipment like Suspension Training, that's a great option as well and the best courses out there today on the subject is from the Red Delta Project with books and youtube videos showing a simplistic approach to strength training and muscle building using your own bodyweight. I would say this type of method with what RDP brings to the table is the bodyweight equivalent to Dinosaur Training. 

These are just ideas you can use and not get overwhelmed with all the craziness that most fitness trainers today try to force upon you. These methods aren't easy but they teach you things that make you feel a bit more at ease with formats that aren't complicated or have confusing aspects to what you should or shouldn't do. They get down to the nitty gritty with exercises that are very easy to learn but make you earn the results you want. These programs aren't watered down and BS entities that others try to push you away from, these are real, time tested methods that show you what real strength and fitness can be. You don't have to spend hours on end to do them either, they teach you how to realistically apply them to the degree where you'll perform exercises that dig into the very muscles you want to work and often use your whole body as a unit. You don't have to do a bunch of exercises either with tons of sets of reps, just a few of them with sets and reps schemes that get the job done and can have you be done within 45 minutes or less so you can go about the rest of your day doing what you need to do. 

I want you to have the best year yet and be in the best shape without the hassle and stress that many put on today. Do simple things to get the best results possible. Be amazingly awesome.

The Double Whammy Of The World Fit Iso Trainer

 When it comes to equipment, very few can top the other but depending on the goals you have, the type of equipment is more suitable to what you want to do more than just having tons of stuff laying around. Over the years, I've gotten Sandbells, Resistance Bands, Hammers, Clubs, Mace, 60d Penny Nails and have a few ab wheels and they're all essential to my regular training but a personal favorite is the Worldfit Iso Trainer. I got the thing on accident as it was part of the wrong order I ended up getting since I ordered the Worldfit Pull-up Handles originally. I got the handles eventually but the Strap was a blessing in disguise.

The Iso Trainer is not just a thing for Isometrics, it doubles as a Suspension Trainer as well. I call it the double whammy because you get more out of it than you think. Having it as a Suspension Trainer adds variety and a whole other plethora of exercises to choose from. I've done Pull-ups, Push-ups, Rows, Rollouts, even Tricep Extensions with this thing and it just feels awesome. The handles are very comfortable and the strap is very sturdy and durable as it can hold up to 400 lbs from what I understand so many people are able to use it. 

You can mimic many exercises of isometrics and when I train with it along with my other Iso Strap, it gives me some of the best workouts I've ever had. It brings that old school vibe like the way Alexander Zass did with his Isometric Chain exercises. You can mimic practically the same exercises as he did and build serious muscle along with developing the tendons that look like they were carved out of granite. It's also very simple to use and van be put into a carry on bag for traveling. I would take it to the park with me, put it around the back of the basketball hoop and do some suspension work or do Isometrics on the ground. Very light as well.

Equipment should be versatile and utilized to the degree where it gives you a good workout almost regardless of where you are. Since my Sciatica is healing up, I will be getting back to Isometric Training and it's making me anxious to whip out that strap again. Isometrics is one of my all-time favorite styles of training and have written countless times about the awesomeness of Overcoming Isometrics. Some days, Isometrics is all I want to train on and it fuels that relaxed yet at the same time ready type of energy and strengthens those weak areas. 

How much does this thing cost? Well certainly not more than 200 bucks like some "Bodyweight Exercise Guru" sells for a single book (fucking ridiculous man), it's roughly 40 bucks which is crazy since you are able to make up so many workouts and learn way more exercises than you would've thought of. When you add Red Delta Project's Suspension Calisthenics book for maybe another 10 bucks on Kindle to the mix, you get a great variety to create virtually any type of workout you want almost anywhere. That's less than the cost of the average monthly gym membership. You'll learn the ins and outs of what works and what doesn't along with having fun with this bad boy. If you throw in a door attachment, there's no reason you can't do some solid suspension training at home and progress. These three things can make the world your oyster and train in ways that didn't seem possible before and it's very well within most people's budget. 

That's one of things I love about training is finding things that are suitable for a budget that works and get the most out of it without needing to use up your paycheck. I'm sorry but I'll take those things over a book some shmuck who thinks it's worthy of pricing that looks like shit and can't make it affordable to people that could use it for their benefit. If it's worth it to you and you've saved up enough to get it, go for it and I really hope it brings you incredible results but it shouldn't take you weeks or even months to save up for something like that, that's a lot of money that doesn't involve groceries or bills. It's robbery in my opinion and full of snake oil crap. There's a difference in someone being cheap and someone who's on a budget, learn it. I believe in top quality things that are in a comfortable range for someone, never should someone be guilt tripped into choosing either a book that costs more than a family meal or getting groceries for your family for the week, that's just not right. 

Anywho, I hope you find this article interesting and take a chance on the Worldfit Iso Trainer, the book and door attachment can be bought later if you want or not at all, it's up to you. I just want to give you an idea of what is possible without the need of a ton of equipment and you can snatch it up and use it for long term health and fitness. Be amazingly awesome and keep at it.

Suspension Training And Other Fun Stuff

Reflecting on this past week has been a great one. We were going to go up camping a second time around but nature told us otherwise (Fires, Thunder Storms) and better be safe than sorry. Made the time though with just being together, enjoying the sun, sitting in the pool and listening to some great tunes. Wife got some vacation time so we made it as fun as we can make it. Went floating up near the mountains with friends and family, went Huckleberry picking this past Saturday and went down to the lake. Just got to soak up that last bit of summer man.

Throughout the little festivities, I was training on not just Isometrics but also getting into Suspension Training. Got myself a new door anchor (The EverStretch) that could hold up pretty good, attached the Iso Belt and was testing out various exercises doing rows, curls, pushups, slow assisted pullups, one legged squats, knee pull ins and others. It's been a while since I've done Suspension type training, the most recent was testing out pullups with the belt at a park and before that was maybe a couple years. I figured getting into it being inspired by Red Delta Project's Suspension Calisthenics book which is pretty damn awesome BTW. Figured I'd snatch up the rest of the series which you can find on the right side bar on the blog. 

Although I don't have a ton of experience in Suspension Training, it is enjoyable and right now, my main focus is working on technique and balance. Don't need to rep out a ton yet and even then just get into the habit of controlling the body and utilizing tension while doing technique reps. If there was ever any consistent suspension workouts in my time was doing the rings in gymnastics in my mid 20's. Didn't do the Iron Cross or anything, just keeping form and tension while doing pull-ups and worked on improving little by little. With the Iso Belt and door anchor, the basics are where it's at and taking the belt to a park and wrap it around the monkey bars to work on other exercises. When it comes to Isometrics, I want to test my strength in the Hybrid Pull-Up and see what I can do with that. The Hybrid Pull-Up is taking a strap and tightening the cross between the two poles on the pull-up bar and then you pull-up or chin-up until you reach that stopping point on the strap hitting both that Overcoming & Yielding Iso combo.


Training is an adventure and should be something you're excited about. Even taking the most basic exercises and turning them into something fun and interesting is where the ultimate goal should end up. That's what I love about Red Delta Project; it's runner Matt Schifferle, has this amazing attitude and enthusiasm for training that's awe inspiring. No question he's one of the best trainers around today and part of the new generation of Physical Culturists but his positivity is where many are drawn to. He doesn't shame anybody and doesn't go for that "my way or the highway" type of attitude, he's relatable, fun to listen to and utilizes his knowledge in a sense where whether you're a complete beginner or a veteran athlete he gives you a rundown that makes you want to do something no matter how small. His ideas may not be completely brand new but he takes old school exercises and tackles the classic formats of muscle control and balance to develop workouts that although low in skill, create the best versions of muscle building and conditioning training.
